Opening night was great!!
We arrived at the theatre at about 6.30pm and most of the audience were already in the cinema. Everyone was there, Jefferson the publicist from the festival and Mary-Catherine our own publicist, Thom Powers who selected the film for the festival, Andrew Herwitz our sales agent and of course Tom Zubrycki our producer. It was great to have all their support.
Thom introduced us and the film to an anticipating audience who appreciated V's tip of her hat to the indigenous people of Canada. He took our picture up on stage which brought a laugh from the audience when I rushed over to turn the camera on.
We stayed for the screening and watched the film with our most positive audience yet, I think it must be at least the 1000 time I've watched the film. It really is pacy, I didn't get bored at all and was a little nervous all the way through. It was over before I knew it. It was great listening to the reactions from everyone in the theatre during the film.
The Q & A went smoothly and the audience completely understood the film. It was great the first question was about the film making process and our own involvement on screen in the story. There was only one pro Polisario person who spoke up. He read from their same list of criticism about translations etc and someone in the audience called out "are you from the Polisario?" he continued on with his criticism and the audience booed him down. Thom politely acknowledged his comments and we moved on. Link to see the Q&A
So many people wanted to talk to us after the film. The director of the New York Film Festival was there and is putting his support behind the film! We did several interviews with TIFF TV and a great radio journo who thought the film was brilliant and important it was lovely speaking with him about the film.
Afterwards we went to the Film Italia party for a bit, but then went to a dinner organised by the festival for the directors at The 5th restaurant. It was great talking to everyone about their films and film making.
It was a brilliant night and I'm looking forward to our second public screening on Friday when everyone from NY will be with us to see the film for the first time on the big screen. Dan
